Australian shares are set to open higher, after US markets rose despite more tariff talk.
ASX futures were up 0.36% or 31 points as of 8:30am on Tuesday, suggesting a higher open.
US stocks rose behind strength in energy and information technology sectors as traders largely shrugged off worries that President Trump's planned steel and aluminum tariffs could ignite a trade war. Steel companies got a lift from that news.
Gold extended its recent record run as investors seek some safety.
McDonald's was the best performing Dow component, rising 4.8% as strength in its international business helped offset a decline in US same-store sales.
DJIA rose 167 points, or 0.4%, to 44,470, the S&P 500 gained 0.7% to 6,066 and the Nasdaq climbed 1% to 19,714.
Investors await congressional testimony from Fed's Powell for any hints of next policy move.
In commodity markets, Brent crude oil was up 1.82% to US$76.02 a barrel, while gold was up 1.59% to US$2,906.68.
The Australian dollar was at 62.76 US cents, up from its previous close of 62.71.
Asia
Chinese shares closed higher. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.6% to 3,322.17, and the Shenzhen Composite Index gained 1.1% to 2,017.81.
Hong Kong shares ended higher. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 1.8% to 21,521.98.
Japanese shares closed flat. The Nikkei Stock Average was unchanged at 38,801.17.
India shares ended lower. The BSE SENSEX fell 0.7% to 77,311.8.
Europe
Stocks in the U.K. finished higher. The FTSE 100 Index rose 0.8% to 8,767.8.
In Europe, shares closed higher. Germany's DAX rose 0.6% to 21,911.74, and France's CAC 40 increased 0.4% to 8,006.22.
North America
U.S. stocks ended higher. The DJIA lifted 0.4% to 44,470.41, the S&P 500 increased 0.7% to 6,066.44, and the Nasdaq gained 1% to 19,714.27.
Among S&P 500 companies, the top three gainers were Super Micro Computer Inc SMCI surging 17.64%, Rockwell Automation Inc ROK jumped 12.57%, and Western Digital Corp WDC lifted 7.11%.
The biggest decliners were ON Semiconductor Corp ON which dropped 8.21%, Incyte Corp INCY fell 7.86%, and Bio-Techne Corp TECH lost 3.98%.
