Chinese shares closed higher. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 2.5% to 3,240.94, and the Shenzhen Composite Index gained 4.2% to 1,915.85.
Hong Kong shares ended higher. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 1.8% to 19,219.78.
Japanese shares closed lower. The Nikkei Stock Average declined 1.8% to 38,474.3.
India shares ended higher. The BSE SENSEX gained 0.2% to 76,499.63.
Europe
Stocks in the U.K. finished lower. The FTSE 100 Index dropped 0.3% to 8,201.54.
In Europe, shares closed higher. Germany's DAX rose 0.7% to 20,271.33, and France's CAC 40 increased 0.2% to 7,423.67.
North America
U.S. stocks ended mixed. The DJIA lifted 0.5% to 42,518.28, the S&P 500 increased 0.1% to 5,842.91, and the Nasdaq dropped 0.2% to 19,044.39.
Among S&P 500 companies, the top three gainers were United Rentals Inc URI surging 5.91%, Celanese Corp CE jumped 5.37%, and Builders FirstSource Inc BLDR lifted 5.31%.
The biggest decliners were Eli Lilly and Co LLY which dropped 6.62%, Charles River Laboratories International Inc CRL fell 6.31%, and Biogen Inc BIIB lost 4.77%.
