Chinese shares closed lower. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.6% to 3,211.43, and the Shenzhen Composite Index slipped 2.7% to 1,856.46.
Hong Kong shares ended higher. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 0.7% to 19,760.27.
Japanese shares closed lower. The Nikkei Stock Average declined 1% to 39,894.54.
India shares ended lower. The BSE SENSEX dropped 0.9% to 79,223.11.
Europe
Stocks in the U.K. finished lower. The FTSE 100 Index dropped 0.4% to 8,223.98.
In Europe, shares closed lower. Germany's DAX fell 0.6% to 19,906.08, and France's CAC 40 declined 1.5% to 7,282.22.
North America
U.S. stocks ended higher. The DJIA lifted 0.8% to 42,732.13, the S&P 500 increased 1.3% to 5,942.47, and the Nasdaq gained 1.8% to 19,621.68.
Among S&P 500 companies, the top three gainers were Super Micro Computer Inc SMCI surging 10.92%, Vistra Corp VST jumped 8.49%, and Tesla Inc TSLA lifted 8.22%.
The biggest decliners were Dollar Tree Inc DLTR which dropped 4.07%, Molson Coors Beverage Co TAP fell 3.37%, and Celanese Corp CE lost 3.35%.
