Chinese shares closed lower. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.5% to 3,351.26, and the Shenzhen Composite Index slipped 2.3% to 1,995.1.

Hong Kong shares ended higher. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 0.8% to 19,883.13.

Japanese shares closed higher. The Nikkei Stock Average lifted 1.2% to 39,161.34.

India shares ended higher. The BSE SENSEX added 0.6% to 78,540.17.

Europe

Stocks in the U.K. finished higher. The FTSE 100 Index added 0.2% to 8,102.72.

In Europe, shares closed mixed. Germany's DAX fell 0.2% to 19,848.77, and France's CAC 40 was unchanged at 7,272.32.

North America

U.S. stocks ended higher. The DJIA lifted 0.2% to 42,906.95, the S&P 500 increased 0.7% to 5,974.07, and the Nasdaq gained 1% to 19,764.88.

Among S&P 500 companies, the top three gainers were Broadcom Inc AVGO surging 5.24%, Advanced Micro Devices Inc AMD jumped 4.52%, and Microchip Technology Inc MCHP lifted 4.25%.

The biggest decliners were Carnival Corp CCL which dropped 3.99%, Paramount Global PARA fell 2.91%, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd NCLH lost 2.90%.
