ASX set to open higher, after US stocks gained to finish off their best week since the election.
Australia
Australian shares are set to open higher, after US stocks gained for the week.
ASX futures were higher 0.33% or 28 points as of 8:00am on Monday, suggesting a higher open.
US stocks rose to finish off their best week since right after the election with gains in the final trading session ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration. Consumer discretionary stocks led the advance led by a 3.1% rise at Tesla and strength in cruise line operators. Investors are betting on business friendly policies from the incoming administration, while markets are buoyed by strong economic data and growth forecasts. DJIA rose 334 points, or 0.8%, to 43487, the S&P 500 gained 1% to 5996 and the Nasdaq jumped 1.5% to 19630.For the week the DJIA gained 3.7%, the S&P 500 added 2.9% and the Nasdaq rose 2.5%.
In commodity markets, Brent crude oil was down 0.62% to US$80.79 a barrel, while gold was down 0.41% to US$2,703.25.
The Australian dollar was at 61.91 US cents.
Asia
Chinese shares closed higher. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.2% to 3,241.82, and the Shenzhen Composite Index added 0.4% to 1,916.19.
Hong Kong shares ended higher. The benchmark Hang Seng Index gained 0.3% to 19,584.06.
Japanese shares closed lower. The Nikkei Stock Average lost 0.3% to 38,451.46.
India shares ended lower. The BSE SENSEX fell 0.5% to 76,619.33.
Europe
Stocks in the U.K. finished higher. The FTSE 100 Index increased 1.4% to 8,505.22.
In Europe, shares closed higher. Germany's DAX rose 1.2% to 20,903.39, and France's CAC 40 added 1.0% to 7,709.75.
North America
US stocks ended higher. The DJIA gained 0.8% to 43,487.83, the S&P 500 increased 1.0% to 5,996.66, and the Nasdaq rose 1.5% to 19,630.20.
Among S&P 500 companies, the top three gainers were Intel Corp INTC, surging 9.20%, Schlumberger Ltd SLB jumped 9.04%, and Truist Financial Corp TFC lifted 5.96%.
The biggest decliners were JB Hunt Transport Services Inc JBHT which dropped 7.38%, Eli Lilly and Co LLY fell 4.20%, and Fair Isaac Corp FICO lost 3.64%.
